It’s not too strange, then, that Destiny 2 would also be getting a major event retrofit as well in the near future. With its latest TWAB blog post, Bungie went into substantial detail on how the new Solstice event will function when it returns in Season 17, with one of the biggest changes being the introduction of a new type of event microtransaction: the Event Card.

Season 17’s Solstice event (previously known as Solstice of Heroes) is going to kick off on July 19, and it will introduce a revamped event progression system with the Event Cards. Event Cards themselves will be free for all players, and they will work in much the same way as the current Seasonal Challenges do. However, players will also have the opportunity to spend an extra 1,000 Silver to upgrade their Event Card and unlock an additional reward track with exclusive cosmetics, which makes the whole thing sound similar to Destiny’s Age of Triumph Record Books.

The new Destiny 2 Solstice of Heroes armor set will still be the focal point of event progression, and free for all players as a key aspirational reward during the Solstice. This time, though, players will have the opportunity to fine-tune their armor as they complete the free version of the Event Card, which should make for a more satisfying and personalized progression experience across the board, according to Bungie.

It’s also worth pointing out that, while the Solstice of Heroes’ European Aerial Zone is, indeed, coming back yet again, there seems to be a new game mode dropping in as well. The so-called Bonfire Bash will be a horde-based defense mode where players need to guard the flames to get as high of a score as possible. This will be facilitated through a variety of modifications to the EAZ, such as the removal of building barriers and the addition of more floating islands.

With improved traversal, more game mode variety, and a presumably bolstered progression system, the new Solstice event sounds like a great time, though the specifics of it will either make or break the player experience. In the case of Guardian Games 2022, Bungie had to hotfix Destiny 2 exploits to put a stop to excessive cheesing, and that might end up being the case again when Solstice finally drops.

Destiny 2 is available on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
